This is a great area to check out around May since it is snow free on the lower portions of the trail.
There is a cool area where the river appears to go through a tunnel. It has always begged to be explored. The photo below and to the left is on the upstream side and the photo below and to the right is on the downstream side.
The water was pretty low, especially for this time of year. So, Landon and I gave it a shot. We pulled off our socks, took the insoles out of our shoes, rolled up our pants (neither of us brought any extra clothes on this short trip), put our shoes back on, and waded in to the frigid water. Seeing an icicle/hunk of ice dripping into the river, made you feel better about gasping.
I have climbed around above this apparent tunnel to see in many places that it is actually a narrow canyon with massive (school bus or small house) sized boulders that are wedged into the walls above. It was cool to see that from inside the tunnel (next photo is looking up).
Mosquitos were starting to make an appearance, but were manageable. Ticks were horrible. A few years ago I didn't see any in this area. Landon and I pulled at least 20 of them off of us on this trip (including a couple I felt crawling under my shirt after getting nice and comfy in my sleeping bag.
After a nice evening (aside from the ticks), we were back on the trail at 6AM headed home for Mother's Day weekend.
